After a 5-year hiatus, Asbury Park’s Overmind has returned in epic fashion. They kicked things off right where they left off by performing a sold out show at the legendary music venue, the Saint. Along with new shows coming soon, they’ve also dropped new music.
Overmind returns at a very vulnerable time for us as a nation. Their first single from the new album, Change Today, is a track with the same name delivering an empowering message of peace and unity. The track was released on Inauguration Day and the proceeds went to support Planned Parenthood. They also joined over 150 artists on Bandcamp in donating their February revenues to the ACLU.
Their music is described as dub-noir, a hybrid of many styles and influences from each of the members different musical backgrounds. They take elements of roots reggae, dub, hip-hop, punk, funk and ska to deliver a powerful message of solidarity. Overmind does an excellent job at playing off of contrasts, by incorporating joyful melodies and dark lyrics or vice versa. They’re message is one of unity, putting aside our differences to come together and grow as a community.
This band combines vibrant sounds with a positive message and action to back it up. You can expect a lot more from Overmind in the near future. There will be plenty of chances to catch them live with plenty of shows in the works. Next you can see them at the Brighton Bar on Saturday, March 25th in Long Branch, NJ. Expect a full release on the 4th of July, but in the mean time, go download Change Today and show love on the socials.
